Exploring our neighborhood
6/2
Nico and I rented the cutest AirBnB in the Latin Quarter. The street is lined with fresh markets, restaurants, shopping, and bars. A foodie's paradise. We wanted to go to a different neighborhood than the one we stayed in during our honeymoon. We wanted to see a whole different side of Paris. Let me just say we are in LOVE! The Latin Quarter is in the 5th arrondismont of Paris. It's filled with 20-somethings looking to have a good time! It's not super touristy and people are friendly! There's a lot of expats and students.
Last night we decided to grab dinner at a local cafe. Our waitress barely spoke English, but we successfully ordered with our broken French. Nico is picking up the language much quicker than I am. I am trying to let my guard down and speak without fear of "failing." We learn through trial and error right?
We both ordered a hamburger and frites! Simple yet delicious. The seeded bun was delish.
Our neighborhood is so alive. The streets are lined with restaurants and bars overflowing with people. I was to overwhelmed to take pictures of the more crowded streets, but this gives a good idea.
Nico and I decided to try to catch the France game somewhere. After searching and searching for a "sports bar." We ended up stumbling upon this little gem, Le Vieux Chêne. It's literal meaning is the Old Oak .
Our bartender had the most contagious smile and was so fun. We drank Delirium all night. Knowing that's my best friend Abi's favorite beer I turned my data on just to send her multiple pictures of the decor. While we were there, we met Americans who were visiting Paris and getting ready for their trip to Croatia. They were from Charleston and Philly. Interestingly enough they were both English teachers in Spain. Nico's eyes lit up. I could see his wheels turning as he was asking them questions about their experience. We ended up partying with them for the rest of the night! After a few drinks our walkup to our apartment was not ideal. Nico somehow still looked incredibly handsome.
Hello jet lag. We were not tired AT ALL. I FaceTimed Maddie and we discussed her getting bangs and wedding talk. Bangs are a no.
After laying in bed wide awake for a couple hours we finally passed out around 3am or 4am.
Next day. 6/3
Looked at my clock and it was 2pm....
Noooo! Hoping we had regulated to the time a little bit we just got set back by sleeping in. We were wiped out. Nico and I didn't want to move or do anything but eat a sandwich and lay in bed.
We finally pulled ourselves together a little bit and walked down the street and grabbed some necessities at Monoprix. On the way home we stopped by a delicious boulangerie for two slices of Quiche Lorraine and and sandwhich. I love "fast food" in Paris.
After eating we ending up relaxing in the apartment for a few hours. We definitely didn't do much today. We opened every window and listen to the city go by. It began to rain and I fought the urge to fall asleep. Suddenly a man starting singing and playing a street organ! Again, we felt like we were in a movie. (If you want to hear him, I took an insta story video. Follow me at @megan_quintana.) Did I mention I love this neighborhood?
After resting we decided to pull ourselves together and go out for dinner. After the rain it got cold! Long sleeves and a scarf were a must! I looked up "best French onion soup near me" and a restaurant called Tourn'Bride popped up. It had mixed reviews. It stated that the food was outstanding, but service was ehh. We decided to take a chance since it was a two minute walk away.
Our waiter wanted nothing to do with us. In his defense we looked like deer in headlights when he approached us. Maybe we turned him off because we didn't have a clue what he was saying and got nervous. So we ordered wine to calm the nerves.
We both fear of offending someone or failing at speaking the language that we freeze. Even though for the most part we know how to order. That is something we definitely need to work on. All in all dinner was delicious and we'd totally go back. I ordered the onion soup and Nico ordered the duck confit.
After dinner we decided to revisit the bar from last night and watch the UEFA Champions League Final. They were sold out of Delirium. Bummer.
The bar was filled with Madrid fans! It was so much fun! After a beer we decided to bar hop a little bit.
Along the way we stumbled upon a building that Ernest Hemingway lived in from 1921-1925!
And a beautiful church with a cotton candy sky!
Here's another picture of the neighborhood!
Bar number 2.
When in Rome...err Paris. Sorry Mom!
Well that's all for now! Tomorrow we plan to finally go see the Eiffel Tower and sit in our spot. I can't believe we haven't seen her yet!
Until next time!
love,
